Glossary

  • Azure: Microsoft cloud computing platform (IaaS, PaaS).
  • Account: Determines how Azure usage is reported and who the Administrator is.
  • Subscription: Organizes and controls how Azure resource usage is reported, billed and paid for.
  • Region: Represents Microsoft-managed datacenter.
  • DNS Server: Specifies the IP address of the DNS Server for a virtual network.
  • Local Network: Specifies an external IP address range for a virtual network when using S2S or P2S connectivity.
  • Virtual Network: Specifies Azure hosted virtual network IP address space.
  • Site-to-Site (S2S) Connectivity: Provides VPN connectivity between a virtual network and on-premise network or another virtual network.
  • Point-to-Site (S2S) Connectivity: Provides VPN connectivity between a virtual network and remote client machines.
  • Storage Account: Provides durable & secure cloud storage in Azure. Storage replication options are LRS, ZRS, GRS and RA-GRS.
  • Locally Redundant Storage (LRS): LRS is replicated three times within a single facility in a single region.
  • Zone Redundant Storage (ZRS): ZRS is replicated three times across two to three facilities, either within a single region or across two regions.
  • Geo Redundant Storage (GRS): GRS is replicated three times within the primary region, and is also replicated three times in a secondary region hundreds of miles away from the primary region.
  • Read Access Geo Redundant Storage (RA-GRS): RA-GRS is replicated as GRS, and also allows read access to data at the secondary region in the event that the primary region becomes unavailable.
  • Cloud Service: Provides logical grouping of virtual machines and of the same server role and type (e.g. SQL Server cluster nodes). It also provides a single public facing DNS entry point for all virtual machine instances in the clould service.
  • Virtual Machine (VM): Software implementation of a machine.
  • Virtual Machine Endpoint: Provides access to a virtual machine from the Internet or other networks. Endpoints specify protocol, public port, private port and access rules (ACL).
  • Virtual Machine Load Balanced Set: Provides DNS load balancing between virtual machine endpoints using both the Azure Load Balancer (public facing) and Internal Load Balancer (internal).
  • Virtual Machine Availability Set: Groups two or more virtual machines to provide redundancy in case of planned or unplanned outage. The machines are automatically placed in different Update Domains (planned outage) and Fault Domains (unplanned outage).
  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Cloud computing service, which provides access to computing resource in a virtual environment.
  • Platform as a service (PaaS): Cloud computing platform and environment, which allows developers to build applications and services.
